# Grok Bot alternatives: Rakazo, OpenBot, opencode and Reason

The main Grok Bot alternatives are Rakazo, an open-source app for persistent AI bots you can self-host; OpenBot, the name of two different projects (a local desktop app from Nightly Labs and a self-hosted platform from CopilotKit); and setups built on the open-source opencode coding agent. You don't have to switch: Reason works with Grok Bot, so your Bots keep their conversations while coding work runs in Reason sessions or your own coding agents.

Updated Nov 2026

## Keep Grok Bot and add Reason in three steps

1. **See what is using your pool**: Open Usage at grok.com/dashboard. If long coding tasks are what run you out, hand those off instead of replacing your Bots.
2. **Hand heavy coding work to Reason**: Open Reason on the web at reasonmachines.com, or in the Reason app for Mac, sign in and connect GitHub. Choose the repository and describe the task, for example "fix the failing tests". The session works in your repository on Reason's own cloud computer, runs the tests and opens a pull request, and it uses your Reason plan's credits, not your Grok weekly pool, so it keeps going whether or not Grok Bot has usage left. With Reason connected to Grok Bot, Grok Bot can also start a session for you; its own messages, including that one, still count toward the weekly pool.

## Grok Bot alternatives compared

| | What it is | Where it runs | Models | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Rakazo | An app for persistent AI teammates that calls itself an open source, self-hosted alternative to Grok Bot; web, desktop, iPhone and Android | Your own machine, or its hosted app | Bring your own model and computer provider | Open source on GitHub (elie222/rakazo) |
| OpenBot (Nightly Labs) | A local-first desktop workspace for persistent AI teammates; a development preview whose agents run with full access | Your computer | The Codex App Server and Claude Code, plus Grok CLI, OpenCode, Gemini, Cursor CLI and Cline CLI | Source-available, PolyForm Noncommercial |
| OpenBot (CopilotKit) | A self-hosted AI coworker platform; each coworker gets its own browser, logins, files and granted tools; in beta | Your infrastructure | Any agent stack, through AG-UI | MIT license |
| opencode-based setups | opencode is an open-source coding agent for the terminal, desktop and IDE; on its own it isn't an always-on bot, so people pair it with a scheduler or a messaging layer | Your computer | 75+ providers, including local models | Open source |
| Reason | A coding agent that works in your repositories on its own cloud machines and opens pull requests; works with Grok Bot through the Reason MCP server | Reason's cloud machines | Reason picks per task; usage is billed to Reason credits | Hosted product by Reason Machines |

Descriptions come from each project's own site or README as of November 2026; check them for the current state. Grok Bot is a product of xAI. Reason is not affiliated with or endorsed by xAI, Rakazo, Nightly Labs, CopilotKit or opencode.

## You don't have to switch

Switching moves your Bots, their memory, routines and logins to a new tool. If the problem is that heavy coding work drains your weekly pool, there's a smaller change: keep Grok Bot for what it does well, and let it hand coding tasks to Reason, or to your own Claude Code or Codex over Reason Network. Grok Bot's own messages still count toward your pool; the coding work doesn't run on Grok Bot.

opencode joins Reason Network the same way, so Grok Bot can message an opencode session on your computer too.

## Grok Bot alternatives for coding, for Claude, and open source

For coding: dedicated coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Devin and Reason write the change and open the pull request; Grok Bot hands larger coding to Cursor cloud agents. Reason is closest to Grok Bot's shape (its own cloud computer, memory, schedules and Slack) and is a coding agent too.

For Claude: Grok Bot picks its own model, with no model picker. Claude Code runs Claude models on your Claude plan, and Reason can run Claude models on a connected Claude Pro or Max plan.

Open source: Rakazo and CopilotKit's OpenBot (MIT) for always-on bots, and OpenHands (MIT) for self-hosted coding agents with schedules and Slack.

## Questions

### What is the best Grok Bot alternative?

It depends on what you need. Rakazo is the closest open-source match for always-on Bots you can self-host. Nightly Labs' OpenBot runs agents you already pay for on your own computer. CopilotKit's OpenBot suits a company that wants AI coworkers on its own infrastructure. For coding work, Reason works alongside Grok Bot instead of replacing it.

### Is there an open-source Grok Bot alternative?

Yes. Rakazo is open source and describes itself as a self-hosted alternative to Grok Bot. CopilotKit's OpenBot is MIT-licensed. Nightly Labs' OpenBot publishes its source under a noncommercial license.

### Do I have to switch away from Grok Bot?

No. Reason works with Grok Bot: add the Reason MCP server and Grok Bot can start Reason sessions for coding work, or message your own Claude Code, Codex or opencode over Reason Network.

### Are OpenBot and openbot.run the same project?

No. openbot.run is Nightly Labs' local desktop app (github.com/nightly-labs/openbot). CopilotKit's OpenBot (github.com/CopilotKit/openbot) is a separate self-hosted platform.

### Does handing work to Reason stop Grok Bot from using my weekly pool?

No. Grok Bot's own messages, including the one where it starts a Reason session, still draw from your Grok weekly pool. The coding work itself (reading the code, running builds and tests, opening the pull request) runs in the Reason session on Reason's cloud machine and uses your Reason plan's credits instead.

### Is Reason made by xAI?

No. Grok Bot is a product of xAI. Reason is built by Reason Machines and is not affiliated with or endorsed by xAI. Limits and prices on this page come from xAI's own documentation; check it for changes.
