# Grok Bot vs Devin: which AI teammate can code?

Devin is Cognition's autonomous AI software engineer that writes, runs and tests code in its own workspace and takes tasks from Slack, while Grok Bot is xAI's always-on teammate for any job, with its own cloud computer, memory and routines. Devin is the one built to ship code; Reason is another always-on teammate built to code, running on the model accounts you connect.

## Try a coding teammate on a real task in Reason

1. **Open Reason on the web or the Mac app**: Sign in at reasonmachines.com, or download the Reason app for macOS from reasonmachines.com/download. Both open the same Sessions. Sending work to Reason needs a Pro or Max plan.
2. **Connect GitHub**: In Customize, open GitHub and choose Connect GitHub, then pick the repositories Reason may work in. Reason opens pull requests from its own branches; your branch protection and required checks still apply.
3. **Describe the task in the composer**: Name the repository and say what you want, for example "fix the failing checkout test and open a pull request". Reason works on its own cloud computer, runs the tests, and opens the pull request for you to review.
4. **Keep it working when you're away**: Mention Reason in Slack to hand it a task from a thread, and set up a Loop for work that repeats, such as a nightly dependency check or a morning CI sweep. Reason keeps memory across Sessions, so it remembers how your repository works.

## Honest tradeoffs

Devin is the dedicated coding teammate, with a free tier and Slack, Linear and Jira built in. Grok Bot is broader: routines that wake on email, webhooks or PagerDuty, email addresses for Bots, and X Chat, but it hands larger coding to Cursor cloud agents.

Reason is an always-on teammate built to code: its own cloud computer per Session, memory across Sessions, Loops and Slack, and you pick the model per task, including on your own Claude, ChatGPT, Grok or Copilot plan. Hit your limit? Reason keeps going on your other connected accounts or Reason credits. Reason has no free plan: Pro is $50 a month.

## Questions

### Is Devin better than Grok Bot for coding?

Devin is built for coding: Cognition calls it an autonomous AI software engineer that writes, runs and tests code. Grok Bot is a general always-on teammate that can code and delegates larger changes to Cursor cloud agents.

### How much does Devin cost compared with Grok Bot?

Devin has a free tier, Pro at $20 and Max at $200 a month, and Teams at $80 a month plus $40 per developer seat. Grok Bot comes with X Subscription Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200 a month.

### Do both work in Slack?

Yes. You can tag Devin in a Slack or Teams thread, and talk to a shared Grok Bot in Slack. Reason also takes tasks when you mention it in Slack.

### What does Reason cost?

Reason's plans are Pro at $50 a month and Max at $200 a month per person; usage is measured in credits, and top-ups keep work going when a week's usage runs out. Models you run on your own connected subscriptions or API keys are billed by that provider and keep that provider's limits.

### Is Reason made by xAI?

No. Grok Bot is a product of xAI. Reason is built by Reason Machines and is not affiliated with or endorsed by xAI, Anthropic, OpenAI or Cognition. Facts about other products on this page come from their own pages, linked under Sources.
