# Autonomous coding agents: what they are and which to use

An autonomous coding agent takes a task, works in its own environment (reading code, running commands and tests) and hands back a finished change, usually a pull request, without you steering each step. The main ones are Devin, Codex cloud, Claude Code on the web, Cursor Cloud Agents, GitHub Copilot's cloud agent, Jules, the open-source OpenHands, and Reason, which adds memory, schedules and Slack.

## Give an autonomous coding agent its first task

1. **Connect GitHub**: In Customize, open GitHub and choose Connect GitHub, then pick the repositories Reason may work in. Reason opens pull requests from its own branches; your branch protection and required checks still apply.
2. **Write the task like an issue**: Say what should change, how to check it and what not to touch, for example "make the checkout test pass without changing the API; run the test suite before opening the pull request".
3. **Give it a task you know the answer to**: In the composer, name the repository and paste a task you've already solved, such as a failing test. Reason works on its own cloud computer, runs the tests and opens a pull request, so you can compare its diff with your other agent's.
4. **Review the pull request, then make it routine**: Read the diff and the checks as you would a teammate's. Once you trust it on a kind of task, set up a Loop in Reason so it runs on a schedule or when a GitHub event or Slack message arrives.

## Autonomous coding agents compared

| | Runs in | Starts from | Schedules |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Reason | Its own cloud computer per Session, or yours | Web, Mac, iOS, Slack, Grok Bot, API | Loops on a schedule, webhook, GitHub event or Slack message |
| Devin | Devin's cloud workspace | Web, CLI, desktop, Slack, Teams, API | Its docs list scheduled sessions |
| Codex cloud | A workspace per task | ChatGPT web, mobile, desktop; terminal | Scheduled tasks |
| Claude Code on the web | Anthropic's cloud | claude.ai/code, Claude app, desktop, terminal, Slack | Scheduled tasks (research preview), at most hourly |
| Cursor Cloud Agents | Isolated cloud VMs | Cursor desktop, web, iOS, Slack, GitHub, Linear, API | Not listed in the docs we read |
| GitHub Copilot cloud agent | Cloud, GitHub Actions or remote | GitHub and Copilot CLI | Automations on a schedule or repository events |
| Jules | A cloud VM | jules.google | Recurring tasks, daily or weekly |
| OpenHands | Your machine by default, or OpenHands Cloud | Its control center, Slack, GitHub, Linear | On a schedule or webhooks |

## What makes one trustworthy

Work on a branch and deliver a pull request; run the tests and show the result; keep your branch protection and required checks in charge of what merges; and say what it couldn't verify. Reason works this way: it opens pull requests from its own branches, checks web changes in a real browser with screenshots, and merges only through your repository's own rules.

Reason is an always-on teammate that is also a frontier coding agent: its own cloud computer per Session, memory across Sessions, Loops and Slack, and the model picked per task from Reason's models or the Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Copilot plans you connect. Hit your limit? Reason keeps going on your other connected accounts or Reason credits. It isn't open source and has no free plan.

## Questions

### What is an autonomous coding agent?

An AI agent that takes a coding task, works in its own environment (reading code, running commands and tests) and returns a finished change such as a pull request, without step-by-step steering.

### How is it different from autocomplete or a chatbot?

Autocomplete suggests the next lines and a chatbot answers questions; an autonomous agent plans the change, edits files across the repository, runs the tests, fixes its own errors and hands back the result.

### Are autonomous coding agents safe?

They're as safe as the guardrails around them: a branch per task, a pull request you review, required checks, and limits on secrets and production access. Keep the repository's own protections in charge of merging.

### Which autonomous coding agent is best?

On public benchmarks the strongest harnesses are Claude Code and Codex. For an agent that also keeps memory, runs on a schedule and takes tasks from Slack, compare Devin and Reason on your own work.

### What does Reason cost?

Pro is $50 a month and Max $200 a month per person, with usage measured in credits; top-ups keep work going when a week's usage runs out. Models you run on your own connected subscriptions or API keys are billed by that provider and keep that provider's limits.

### Is Reason affiliated with these vendors?

No. Reason is built by Reason Machines and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic, OpenAI, Anysphere, Cognition, GitHub, Google or xAI. Facts about their products come from their own pages, linked under Sources.
