# Devin alternatives: autonomous AI engineers compared

The main Devin alternatives are Reason, Codex cloud, Claude Code on the web, Cursor's Cloud Agents, GitHub Copilot's cloud agent and Google's Jules, plus OpenHands if you want to self-host an open-source one. Like Devin, each takes a task, works in its own cloud environment and hands back a change, and they differ in models, Slack and schedules, and price.

[Start with Reason](https://reasonmachines.com/) on the web, or [download Reason for macOS](https://reasonmachines.com/download).

## Try a Devin alternative on a real task

1. **Open Reason on the web or the Mac app**: Sign in at reasonmachines.com, or download the Reason app for macOS from reasonmachines.com/download. Both open the same Sessions. Sending work to Reason needs a Pro or Max plan.
2. **Connect GitHub**: In Customize, open GitHub and choose Connect GitHub, then pick the repositories Reason may work in. Reason opens pull requests from its own branches; your branch protection and required checks still apply.
3. **Give it a task you know the answer to**: In the composer, name the repository and paste a task you've already solved, such as a failing test. Reason works on its own cloud computer, runs the tests and opens a pull request, so you can compare its diff with your other agent's.
4. **Keep it working when you're away**: Mention Reason in Slack to hand it a task from a thread, and set up a Loop for work that repeats, such as a nightly dependency check. Its Sessions run on Reason's cloud computers, so they keep going with your laptop closed.

## Devin alternatives at a glance

| | Made by | Open source | Where it runs | Price |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Reason | Reason Machines | Not open source | Web, Mac and iOS apps, Slack, command line; its own cloud computer per Session, or yours | Pro $50, Max $200 a month; credits |
| Codex | OpenAI | CLI under Apache-2.0 | CLI, IDE, desktop, web, iOS; Codex cloud tasks keep working while your computer sleeps | Included in ChatGPT Free and Go; Plus $20; Pro $100 to $500 a month |
| Claude Code | Anthropic | Not open source | Terminal, IDE, desktop, web; cloud sessions keep running with the laptop closed | Claude Pro $20, Max $100, Ultra $200 a month |
| Cursor | Anysphere | Not open source | AI code editor; Cloud Agents run in cloud VMs, from the editor, web, iOS or Slack | Free; Plus $8 (Grok models only); Premium $30; Super $100; Ultra $200 a month |
| GitHub Copilot cloud agent | GitHub | Not open source | Works in the background in a cloud environment; sessions on Actions run at most 59 minutes | Copilot paid plans from $10 to $100 a month; Business $19 per seat |
| Jules | Google | Not open source | Experimental; runs tasks in a cloud VM | 15 tasks a day free; more with Google AI Pro and Ultra |
| OpenHands | OpenHands contributors | MIT | Self-hosted control center for coding agents; local by default, OpenHands Cloud optional; schedules and Slack | Free to self-host; OpenHands Cloud is commercial |

From each vendor's own pages, checked Nov 2, 2026. For reference, Devin has a free tier, Pro at $20 and Max at $200 a month, and Teams at $80 a month plus $40 per developer seat; it takes tasks from Slack and Teams and works in a workspace with a shell, IDE and browser.

## Which alternative for which reason

Self-host and open source: OpenHands (MIT) runs locally by default, with schedules and Slack. Already on ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor: their cloud agents (Codex cloud, Claude Code on the web, Cursor Cloud Agents) keep working with your laptop closed. On GitHub: Copilot's cloud agent researches, plans and implements changes in the background.

Reason is an always-on teammate that is also a frontier coding agent: its own cloud computer per Session, memory across Sessions, Loops and Slack, and the model picked per task from Reason's models or the Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Copilot plans you connect. Hit your limit? Reason keeps going on your other connected accounts or Reason credits. It isn't open source and has no free plan.

## Questions

### What is the best alternative to Devin?

It depends on where you already are: Codex cloud on ChatGPT plans, Claude Code on the web on Claude plans, Cursor Cloud Agents on Cursor Premium and higher, and Copilot's cloud agent on GitHub. Reason works across those model accounts, with Slack and Loops.

### Is there an open-source Devin?

OpenHands is the closest: MIT-licensed, self-hosted by default, with automations on a schedule or webhooks and Slack. OpenHands Cloud is its commercial hosted option.

### Is Devin worth the price?

Devin has a free tier and a $20 Pro plan, so you can try it on real work before paying more. Compare it with an agent you already pay for on the same task.

### Can Codex or Jules replace Devin?

For tasks that run in a cloud environment and return a change, yes: Codex cloud tasks keep working while your computer sleeps, and Jules runs tasks in a cloud VM. Devin adds Slack and Teams, Linear and Jira out of the box.

### What does Reason cost?

Pro is $50 a month and Max $200 a month per person, with usage measured in credits; top-ups keep work going when a week's usage runs out. Models you run on your own connected subscriptions or API keys are billed by that provider and keep that provider's limits.

### Is Reason affiliated with these vendors?

No. Reason is built by Reason Machines and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic, OpenAI, Anysphere, Cognition, GitHub, Google or xAI. Facts about their products come from their own pages, linked under Sources.
