Yes: Claude Code cloud sessions keep running after you close your laptop, and its cloud scheduled tasks (in research preview) can run nightly, while a session on your own computer stops when the computer sleeps. Overnight runs still stop at your Claude plan's five-hour or weekly limit, so for a night shift that keeps going, Reason works on its own cloud computer and moves to your other accounts or Reason credits at a limit.

Set up a coding night shift in Reason

  1. Open Reason on the web or the Mac app

Sign in at reasonmachines.com, or download the Reason app for macOS from reasonmachines.com/download. Both open the same Sessions. Cloud computers come with a Pro or Max plan.

  2. Connect the plans you already pay for

In Settings › Models, connect your Claude (Pro or Max), ChatGPT, Grok or GitHub Copilot plan, or add API keys. Reason runs on your own accounts first; a Reason plan's credits cover the rest.

  3. Hand over the task before you log off

Push your branch and tell Reason in the composer what's done, what's next and how to check it, for example "finish the migration, keep the test suite green, and open a pull request". The Session runs on Reason's cloud computer, so it keeps going after you close your laptop.

  4. Make it a Loop if it repeats

Open Loops in the sidebar and describe the job and when it runs, such as every night at 2am, or on each new GitHub issue or Slack message. Each run picks up the Loop's instructions and Reason's memory of your repository.

  5. Review the pull request in the morning

Read the diff, the test results and anything Reason says it couldn't verify. Your branch protection and required checks still decide what merges.

Ways to run Claude Code overnight

WayNeeds your computer onWhat to know
Claude Code on the web (cloud session)NoKeeps running after you close your laptop; cloud sessions stop after a period of inactivity
Cloud scheduled taskNoResearch preview on Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise; schedules more often than hourly are rejected
Desktop scheduled taskYesIf the computer sleeps through the scheduled time, the run is skipped; closing the lid still puts it to sleep
/loop in a sessionYesRecurring tasks expire seven days after they're created
GitHub Actions on a cron scheduleNoRuns in automation mode on any GitHub event; in public repositories GitHub disables a schedule after 60 days without activity
Headless mode in your own jobDepends where it runsStops background work after 10 minutes of idle waiting by default; pass the documented flag so nobody has to answer permission prompts

From Anthropic's Claude Code docs, checked Nov 2, 2026. Every way draws on the same Claude plan, with a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit shared with claude.ai; verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour limit.

What stops a night shift, and how Reason handles it

Three things end an overnight run: the computer going to sleep, a usage limit, and a permission prompt nobody answers. Cloud sessions fix the first; the other two need planning.

Reason runs each Session on its own cloud computer, so your laptop can sleep. Hit your limit? Reason keeps going on your other connected accounts or Reason credits. It works on a branch and opens a pull request for the morning, and Loops repeat the job every night without anyone starting it.

Questions

Can Claude Code run overnight?

Yes, in the cloud: Claude Code on the web keeps running after you close your laptop, and cloud scheduled tasks can run nightly. A session on your own computer stops if the computer sleeps.

Will Claude Code keep running if I close my laptop?

A local session won't: closing the lid puts the computer to sleep, and desktop scheduled runs are skipped while it sleeps. Cloud sessions and cloud scheduled tasks keep going.

How do I run Claude Code overnight?

Start the task as a Claude Code cloud session, or set up a cloud scheduled task, or a GitHub Actions workflow on a cron schedule. Make sure the run won't wait on a permission prompt, and check your plan's limits first.

What happens when Claude hits its usage limit overnight?

Claude Code stops at your plan's five-hour or weekly limit until it resets, unless you've added usage credits. Hit your limit? Reason keeps going on your other connected accounts or Reason credits.

Is there a Claude Code night shift tool?

Community projects wrap Claude Code to resume after a limit resets. Anthropic's own options are cloud sessions, scheduled tasks and GitHub Actions. Reason does the night shift as a product: cloud computers, Loops, and rollover to your other accounts or Reason credits.

Is Reason affiliated with Anthropic?

No. Reason is built by Reason Machines and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic, OpenAI, Anysphere, GitHub, Google, Cognition or xAI. Facts about their products come from their own docs, linked under Sources.
