Use Reason on the web, or in the Mac app.

Two AI engineers, compared fairly.

Devin is Cognition's autonomous AI software engineer, with its own workspace, Slack and Teams, and plans from free to $200 a month; Reason is an always-on teammate and coding agent with its own cloud computer per Session, memory, Loops and Slack, that runs on the model accounts you connect. Devin has a free tier and Reason doesn't; Reason lets you bring your own Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Copilot plans and keeps going on other accounts or Reason credits at a limit.

Try Reason and Devin on the same task

  1. Run the task in Devin

Give Devin a task in your repository that you already know the answer to, such as fixing a failing test.

  2. Open Reason on the web or the Mac app

Sign in at reasonmachines.com, or download the Reason app for macOS from reasonmachines.com/download. Both open the same Sessions. Sending work to Reason needs a Pro or Max plan.

  3. Run the same task in Reason

Connect GitHub, name the repository and paste the same prompt. Reason works on its own cloud computer, runs the tests and opens a pull request. Compare whether each change is correct, how long it took and what it cost.

When to use which

Devin is a good fit if you want a free tier and Teams, Linear and Jira out of the box. Reason fits if you want to choose the model per task, use subscriptions you already pay for, and keep a task going when one account runs out.

Hit your limit? Reason keeps going on your other connected accounts or Reason credits.

Questions

Is Reason better than Devin?

There is no public head-to-head. Both are autonomous software engineers with their own cloud workspaces and Slack. Devin has a free tier; Reason runs on the model accounts you connect and keeps going on others at a limit. Try both on your own work.

Does Reason have a free plan?

No. Reason's plans are Pro at $50 a month and Max at $200 a month per person. Devin has a free tier and Pro at $20 a month.

Can Reason use my ChatGPT or Claude plan?

Yes. In Settings › Models, connect ChatGPT (Plus, Pro or Business), Claude (Pro or Max), Grok or GitHub Copilot, and Reason runs those models on your plan. Its own limits still apply.

What does Reason cost?

Pro is $50 a month and Max $200 a month per person, with usage measured in credits; top-ups keep work going when a week's usage runs out. Models you run on your own connected subscriptions or API keys are billed by that provider and keep that provider's limits.

Is Reason affiliated with these vendors?

No. Reason is built by Reason Machines and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic, OpenAI, Anysphere, Cognition, GitHub, Google or xAI. Facts about their products come from their own pages, linked under Sources.
