Dates are the dates on the vendor's release notes or changelog. Anthropic's Ultra pages are undated; Anthropic announced the rename on its @claudeai account on X on October 30. Anthropic's newsroom lists no limit-related post in this week.
Oct 30, 2026 · Anthropic: Max 20x is now Ultra
Anthropic: "The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan. Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically, with no price change." Ultra costs $200 a month and includes ten times the Pro plan's usage every week. "Verified Ultra accounts don't have a five-hour limit. If your account isn't verified yet, a temporary limit applies."
Because verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour limit, Claude Code's "Usage limit reached · wrapping up" allowance at the five-hour limit doesn't apply to them. Max ($100 a month, five times Pro) and Pro keep both the five-hour and weekly limits.
Oct 30, 2026 · Anthropic: fast mode for Opus 4.8 deprecated in Claude Code
The Claude Code changelog (version 2.1.316): "Deprecated fast mode for Opus 4.8 as of October 30, 2026; it will be removed on November 30, 2026."
Oct 29, 2026 · OpenAI: twice the allowance on Pro 100 and Pro 500
OpenAI's release notes: "Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance." OpenAI's Pro plans article says existing subscribers "receive it automatically without waiting for renewal".
The same release note: "We've also canceled the Pro 200 reduction announced in our September 29 email." Pro 200 subscribers who had the lower allowance had it doubled to match, at the same $200 price. OpenAI adds: "Plus usage is unchanged."
Oct 28, 2026 · OpenAI: promotional API credits for Pro and Business
OpenAI's release notes: "Eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can activate promotional API credits to build apps and agents with the OpenAI API." These are API credits for a linked API organization, separate from ChatGPT usage credits, so they don't raise your Codex limit inside ChatGPT.
Oct 26, 2026 · OpenAI: GPT-6.1 Terra, limits unchanged
OpenAI's release notes: "Select GPT-6.1 Terra from the model list. Your plan's overall usage limits are unchanged." OpenAI's Codex pricing page lists GPT-6.1 Terra at an estimated 35 to 285 local messages per five hours on Plus; OpenAI says these estimates are not fixed message limits.
Coming in December 2026 · OpenAI: one allowance for ChatGPT and Codex
OpenAI: "Starting in December, Plus, Pro, and Business plans' usage allowance will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex", measured in tokens, with combined remaining usage and reset times in Settings → Usage. Instant chat will not draw from it. OpenAI's article doesn't give the date it was announced.
What didn't change this week
Claude's five-hour window still starts with your first message and resets in full five hours later, and weekly limits still reset at a fixed time assigned to your account. Claude Code's /usage-credits command was renamed from /extra-usage in May 2026, and Codex's /usage rate-limit reset predates this week, so neither is a change from this week.
Questions
Did the Claude usage limits change in late October 2026?
Yes, for the top plan: on October 30, 2026 Anthropic renamed Max 20x to Ultra at the same $200 price, with ten times Pro's weekly usage and no five-hour limit for verified accounts. Pro and Max limits work as before.
Does Claude Ultra have a five-hour limit?
Not for verified accounts. Anthropic says a temporary limit applies until the account is verified. Weekly limits still apply.
Did Codex limits change?
